Hey everyone it’s the weekend at last! I am so excited to share one of my latest finds with all of you! We are not big on buying commercially processed dog biscuits for our dog River obviously we do buy him treats from time to time but no more because when I was at our local home brew store I stumbled on a recipe that dogs go nuts over and met a fellow blogger as well. I had heard of using spent grains for cooking etc…but had never really tried it before.
I should clarify that we do NOT brew our own beer at this time….my husband has made some wine but all you need to make wine is fruit, sugar and yeast for the most part. Making your own brew involves using hops and is an adventure all unto itself. A friend of ours has invited us to a couple of home brew parties and we have learned a lot about this hobby which I must say I could liken to an art form. I am not a beer aficionado but I have become a lot more educated than I used to be.
I am a dog lover so when I came home I couldn’t wait to have our dog River try one of these treats he just absolutely loved it. I knew I would have to look up her blog right away and here it is K’s World: Full of Food, Beer & Love and I know you guys will all love it as much as I do! Whether you are a beer enthusiast or not you will love the recipes she has come up with they are amazing! I have been fortunate to sample some of her other goodies as well!
I am not going to list out the directions in detail as I used her recipe and you can go to her site to get the scoop but I did make a minor modification (as you all know I always tweak just about every recipe I get my hands on ;)…)so this last time I made it just as she specified but I added some honey.
Ingredients:
- 4 C. spent grain
- 2 C. flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 C. creamy peanut butter
- 1/3 C. honey
I have also added wheat germ or brewers yeast…..you could add oatmeal probably too if you wanted too just to mix thinks up but the recipe is great all by itself too!
In a large bowl mix all ingredients or use your mixer with your dough hook it works like a champ and it’s quick!
Spread out like cookie dough on a pan and score to break easily later.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 45 minutes.
Break apart all of the treats and flip over and continue cooking at 200 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes. We have left in the oven for several hours though until all of the moisture is cooked out. Often we will just turn the oven off before we go to bed and let them continue to cook in the heat that is left in the oven. They will be ready in the morning!
My dog goes nuts for these cookies it is unbelievable he will start drooling before I get a treat out of the cookie jar and when our friend calls us to pick up some of his spent grain from the last batch of beer he brewed and we bring it home our dog loves to eat the grains straight out of the bucket. Do you know a home brewer? Most of them are happy to share their spent grains with you guaranteed not all of them are going to make these dog greats as they can be time intensive as opposed to just going to the grocery store and buying dog treats but I have never gotten a reaction with any other dog treat the way he loves these!
Also I should mention spent grains turn quickly so when we get home if we know we cannot cook them all up we drain them pretty thoroughly and freeze them in 2 C. portions for future use they most likely will have to be drained again after they thaw and cooked quickly.
I hope you get an opportunity to try making these sometime…if you do please let me know how your pal likes them. By the way I have tried these and they are not bad…..I can totally understand why he does love them! 🙂
Fondly,
